Supplements I Use
Supplements I Use for my Nigerian Goats

Note: Proper dosage on supplements added to feed needs to be close to exact. I found that Sweetlix is the best free-choice mineral out there, yet it was not enough for the needs of my goats (zinc, copper, selenium).
Here are some of the symptoms associated with mineral deficiencies:
- Selenium deficiency: Weak muscles, trouble breathing, turned down/crooked tails, weak pasterns/slippery feet, infertility, miscarriages, weak kids.
- Zinc deficiency: Stiff joints, skin problems, low interest in breeding, deformed hooves, excessive salivating, flaky skin, poor coat condition
- Copper deficiency: Fishtail, dull coat, coarse hair, hair that curls at the end only, abortion, stillbirths, weight loss, low milk supply, balding around eyes or bridge of nose.
- Calcium & Phosphorus (usually found together) deficiency: Rickets, milk fever.
- Iodine deficiency: Goiters.
- Iron deficiency: Anemia, weakness.
- Sodium deficiency: Licking the ground or eating dirt.
- Manganese deficiency: Slow growth in kids, reduced fertility and stillbirths.
- Boron: joint problems, arthritis
Regarding supplements which will greatly help goats to flourish and eventually breed and get bred and produce kids & milk, here is the list and where to look for the products:
Hoegger Supply, Inc. in business since 1935 and is specific to the dairy industry.

Here is a list of supplements I recommend:
Hoegger's Original Herbal Wormer is something new for me, highly recommended. It is compounded especially for goats. Safe for pregnant does and no milk withdrawal. It is a powder to be mixed with feed ration 1X weekly. I will of course, continue to use chemical dewormers in stubborn cases.
Hoegger's Original Herbal Toner: All natural also. Promotes a healthy immune system, tones and conditions skin & coat. powder to be mixed with feed ration 2X weekly.
Kelp may be purchased from Hoegger, however, I buy mine in 50 lb. bags from the Mill. I add 1/4 cup per goat to their daily feed ration. It can also be fed alone as a daily treat, they love it.
Copper Supplement: This is a powder I have been using since Spring with much success instead of Copper Bolus. This is added DAILY to their feed ration.
When you start having pregnant does and kids, you will want to get Hoegger's Selenium Gel and BoSe from your Vet.
Opti-Ferm Yeast: this is a powdered yeast culture designed for optimal digestive function and a balanced immune system. Mix in with feed 1-2X weekly.
From Redmond Agriculture.com:
Selenium 90 to BOOST IMMUNITY AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
Redmond Selenium 90 is a premium ancient trace mineral salt, fortified with added selenium (90ppm), copper, manganese, cobalt, iodine, and zinc. This salt is mixed into their feed portion daily. I add 1 heaping Teaspoon per quart of feed daily.
Redmond Conditioner® This is a new supplement for me to use and looks very promising.
-
Redmond Conditioner® is an all-natural volcanic clay that comes from our mineral deposit in Central Utah. It also contains our full spectrum of trace minerals and unique to Conditioner is its ability to improve gut health and nutrient absorption in livestock through binding toxins and buffering acid.
-
With its natural ability to bind toxins, such as mold in feed, the rumen can absorb more nutrients instead of being compromised by the toxins. Additionally, because of its high pH, it buffers acid in the rumen keeping the gut settled and comfortable.
-
Conditioner is a versatile and vital supplement for all classes of livestock.
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth 50lb Bag I add 1/4 cup to 4 quarts feed ration daily for deworming. I have cut my need to deworm my goats by 75% since doing this daily.
Zinpro 40 (zinc methionine complex) is a nutritional feed ingredient for animals that contains organic zinc. The trace mineral zinc is required by animals for numerous functions, including: immunity, reproduction, skin and hoof integrity, muscle development, milk production. When used correctly, there is no toxicity hazard in the use of ZINPRO zinc methionine complex. Store in a clean and dry environment.

SWEETLIX Goat Minerals to be available at all times for goats to eat as they need it.
Please read my article on Goat Minerals before buying your Sweetlix because there is one type you do not want to feed them.
- Here's why AppleJo Farms does not use this Mineral with Monovet® or Rumensin® at all. Many sources say not to do so if you have lactating goats. https://www.journalofdairyscience.org/ states: "Do not feed to lactating goats." Lactating goats fed with Monovet or Rumensin results in decreased milk fat secretion relative to milk volume. Sweetlix Meat Maker® 16:8 Mineral is the Mineral you want to feed all of your goats. This is the one usually sold in feed stores.
